Family Business Filfil on Living Wages

One of the most recent local businesses to sign up to our Living Wage campaign is FilFil, a small family business in the heart of the North Laine specialising in making authentic falafel and humous and a variety of middle eastern mezze.

Owner Amal Cashin established the business just over eight years ago with the help of her husband.

She explains; ”Growing up in my early years in the middle east ignited my passion for food and I enjoy the way it brings people from all walks of lives together.

“Brighton is becoming an expensive town to live in and for people to be able to remain living and working in Brighton they need to earn a decent enough wage. To run a business like ours we need people who understand the food and are passionate about it. Paying the real Living Wage helps me retain my experienced staff –  and hopefully if my staff are happy that makes my customers happy too!

“If the staff are happy and don’t need to stress about their income or wages it makes their life a lot more bearable, although even with a Living Wage it is tough for them to rent and live in Brighton.”

Amal is also one of the founders of Sussex Bake Down, a group of bakers who make delicious treats to add to food parcels supplied by local food banks, including birthday cakes for children referred by the food banks.
