Meet a Living Wage Employer: We Love Falafel

Since 2015, We Love Falafel has provided Brighton with the freshest, all-vegetarian Falafel. We spoke to Ben Wright about the new shop they opened and why they are part of the Living Wage Campaign.

Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do?

We’re a busy falafel shop in the heart of Brighton’s North Laine area providing healthy, filling and affordable lunches. We make everything fresh from scratch every day and keep our menu simple to eliminate food waste.

You’ve recently opened a new location, what’s the biggest thing you learned opening shop number two?

We opened our second shop in Pool Valley in February, it’s in a far less busy area than our first shop but VERY handy for the beach and a lot less queuing! We’re working with Deliveroo and Uber Eats too at the new site so the main thing we’ve learned is about tweaking our menu so it appeals more to people ordering delivery rather than eating on the go.

What is a best-seller on your menu, and what’s your favourite?

Our best seller is the original falafel salad wrap, our own take on a traditional falafel. My own personal favourites are a lot of the specials that we do, particularly Masala (with mango chutney and bombay mix), we’ve got a new spicy Gochujang one which I’m really enjoying, and recently we came up with Marmite falafel which frightened a few purists but was genuinely one of the best things we’ve ever made.

Why is it important for your business to be part of The Living Wage Campaign?

Our whole team are brilliant and work so hard in a really demanding environment. The cost of living (especially in Brighton) keeps going up and it’s important to do as much as we can to reward their hard work. Showing that we respect and care for our team builds trust and creates a happier working environment which is good for everyone.

Where is your favourite place in the world to eat?

Other than our shop and my house, probably Planet India and Bonsai Plant Kitchen. And No Catch for amazing vegan fish and chips. We’re pretty spoiled for tasty food in Brighton really!
